In the Footsteps of Easy Company: Behind the Scenes of the National WWII Museum Normandy Tour
It was an absolute privilege last week to lead the Normandy segment of the Band of Brothers Tour for The National WWII Museum.
Walking the historic grounds of Normandy with guests who carry a deep passion for World War II history is always an incredible experience. But following the exact path of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, the famous "Easy Company", brings a unique emotional and historical weight to every stop on the itinerary.
While millions know the story of Easy Company through Stephen Ambrose’s book and the HBO miniseries, standing on the edge of the fields at Brécourt Manor or standing in the quiet square of Sainte-Mère-Église offers an unmatched perspective. Ground terrain, field layout, and spatial distance tell a story that words and cameras simply cannot capture. Supported by an exceptional team of tour leaders, co-guides, drivers and actors from the show (James Madio as Frank Perconte and Ross McCall as Joseph Liebgott), our goal throughout this tour was to zoom out and examine the larger picture.
We explored the broader airborne drop zones across the Cotentin Peninsula, uncovering how the scattered drops of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions created decisive challenges for German defenders. By connecting these airborne operations directly to the amphibious landings, we examined how securing key causeways protected the landing at Utah Beach and ensured the initial success of the invasion. We then confronted the bloody reality of Omaha Beach, analyzing the German strongpoints and the resistance faced by the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions. Finally, we traced the hard-fought push inland, following the brutal hedgerow combat toward Carentan to see how these engagements ultimately unified the Allied beachheads.
By pairing the intimate, human-scale stories of individual soldiers with the grand strategic overview of Operation Overlord, our travelers gained a complete understanding of the American involvement on D-Day. To guide guests through these meaningful sites and to share the quiet moments of reflection at the Normandy American Cemetery is a reminder of why I do this work every day.
